Happy New Year of the OX 2009

I love New York!
I adore that they close down the streets and celebrate...
ALL THE TIME!
These pictures were taken Monday, January 26 at the the Chinese New Year Parade on Mott Street in Chinatown. I left the Gift Show at noon, took the subway to Canal Street and joined the massive throng of people making their way to the parade. The confetti cannons were going off everywhere and the crowds below chased to catch the good luck parachutes with the spent cannon cyclinders - it's almost like a dance!
The parachutes would slowly drift down, the crowd would swarm together and suddenly the wind would shift and the parachute would dart across the street. Great comedy and the drums were beating all the while. I watched for over an hour, loved the dragon dancers and crowd watching was at it finest but it was hard to not get really, really hungry. The smell of sizzling garlic filled the streets and every steamy window held ducks, more ducks, and lots of other exotic looking birds, fish and other yummy things.
I'd walked past an old Italian restaurant called Forlini's and the special board had Trippa! So there I was, headed into an Italian restaurant on Chinese New Year - why not?
The lentil soup was divine - the sauteed endive delectable and the trippa was tender and delicious although the portion would have served 3 or 4 people! Amazingly restorative though, which is one of the reasons I love tripe so very much! I'd arrived in the city at 4:30 in the morning, watched the sun rise over Central Park and after my delicious lunch I got back to the show and worked another 4 hours before heading back to my hotel.
I love New York!
